Meet the Team

Founding Partner

Our founding partner, Covington D. Horan, was born and raised in Franklin, Tennessee (a true native!). Covington comes from a line of small business owners, and she uses her experiences growing up around the family businesses to advise entrepreneurs at all stages of their business needs. Covington prides herself in her ability to handle complex family matters regarding estate planning based on her own experiences. Covington is also a third-generation graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she received her B.A. in psychology and sociology with a concentration in criminal justice and a minor in philosophy. During her time at UT, Covington was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity.

Covington graduated cum laude from the University of Mississippi School of Law, receiving a Business Law certificate with honors. She also earned a best performance award in her Business Planning class and was selected to serve on the Dean’s Leadership Council. As part of her coursework, Covington studied Gift & Estate Tax Law, Income Tax Law, Partnership Tax Law, and Corporate Tax Law. Additionally, Covington was a member of the Business Law Institute, the Lawyer’s Association for Women, and the Public Interest Law Foundation.

Covington was recognized by the Ole Miss Pro Bono Initiative and Clinical Programs for distinction in providing pro bono service during her time in law school. Covington was also selected to participate in the Child Advocacy program during law school, where she served as an assistant Guardian ad Litem for children in cases involving allegations of neglect and abuse, making recommendations to the court regarding the best interests of the children.

Covington served as an assistant editor to the West Publishing Company’s Tennessee Practice Series volumes on business formation and estate planning from 2018 until 2021. She is a member of the Nashville Bar Association and the Tennessee Bar Association.

When she is not working, Covington can be found with her husband, Alec, and her Belgian Malinois, Luna (a regular in the office), or curled up with a book.

  • Yes. A will is an important piece, but it only takes effect after you pass away and usually requires probate. A comprehensive estate plan can include a trust, powers of attorney, and other documents that protect your assets, reduce stress for your loved ones, and give you control during your lifetime as well as after.

  • A will directs how your assets are distributed after death, but it typically goes through probate, which can be public and time-consuming. A trust can help your family avoid probate, keep matters private, and in many cases provide more flexibility and protection for your heirs.

  • At Dismukes Law, you’re not just another case number. Our small-firm attention means we get to know your family, your goals, and your values. With deep female leadership and strong roots in Middle Tennessee, we offer both personal connection and professional expertise.
